What is gel coat?

Gel coat is a type of resin-based coating that is applied to the surface of fiberglass to provide a smooth, glossy finish and protect the underlying material from UV damage, water absorption, and abrasion. It is commonly used in the production of fiberglass boats, RVs, and other composite structures.

Gel coat is typically sprayed or brushed onto the fiberglass surface in multiple layers and allowed to cure, forming a durable and attractive finish that is resistant to chipping, cracking, and fading. It can be colored to match the desired aesthetics of the finished product and can also be polished to a high shine.

In addition to its aesthetic and protective properties, gel coat also provides a barrier against osmotic blistering in fiberglass structures, which can occur when water penetrates the surface and causes the layers of fiberglass to separate.

While gel coat is a durable and long-lasting material, it can be prone to cracking, scratching, and yellowing over time, especially when exposed to harsh environmental conditions. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning and waxing, can help prolong the life of gel coat finishes.
